TREE DATA: The tree attains a height of over 100 feet (30 m), with a trunk diameter of 36 to 48 inches (90 to 120 cm).

REGION: Africa.

COUNTRY: Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zaire.

SAPWOOD COLOR: The sapwood is pale straw or pale yellow to whitish and is sharply demarcated from the heartwood.

HEARTWOOD COLOR: Heartwood is reddish-brown in color and is sharply demarcated from the sapwood.

COMMON USES: Boat building, Furniture, Domestic flooring, Joinery, Kitchen cabinets, Stair rails, Stairworks, etc.

MOVEMENT IN SERVICE: Seasoned wood is reported to have good dimensional stability, and exhibits rather small movement after manufacture.

STRENGTH PROPERTIES: The species has very high bending strength, and is much stronger than Teak in the air-dry condition (about 12 percent moisture content). It has exceptionally high maximum crushing strength (compression parallel to grain) in the air-dry condition. It is hard - harder than Teak, and does not marr or dent easily. It is a very heavy wood. The wood is very dense.
